Now in its 13th year this traditional country fair, which celebrates the best of rural life, has become a popular event in the Essex summer diary, offering entertainment for all the family; there really will be something for everyone to enjoy in a wonderful rural setting.

Daytime events from 12.30pm include demonstrations and stalls with traditional crafts, rural skills and ever popular activities including: Competition Tent, Pets Corner, Pony Rides, Children’s Entertainer, Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Refreshments and Homemade Cakes, Breads, Cookies , Sweets and Jam, a Burger Van, Hog Roast, Ice Cream, Hot Doughnuts and of course the Beer Tent and Prosecco Tent.

With live music throughout the day. Traditional games & stalls plus displays of traditional rural skills and crafts, agricultural machinery. Arena activities include Dog Display and Fly Fishing Demonstration plus family games and events. With live music on offer throughout the day, the entertainment will culminate in the evening with the amazing ‘Jupiter Ray’ who return to Woodham Walter by popular demand following their fantastic appearance last year.

Woodham Walter is a hidden gem of a village which boasts a traditional old-fashioned community feel. There is a primary school with about 100 children, 2 golf courses, a brand new holiday lodge park, 3 pubs plus the only surviving Elizabethan church in Essex built in 1563. The village is well worth a visit and on the day of the event, Sunday August Bank Holiday, Woodham Walter (just off the A414 between Danbury and Maldon) will be buzzing with excitement and atmosphere.

Five Summer Garden Tips

As we approach the hottest part of the year, we are giving you five Summer Garden Tips to help make a better place to put the BBQ.

  1. Regular cutting of the lawn is better off for your garden in the summer, do it little and often to thicken the grass and to help keep it healthy. Keep the grass a little longer in mid-summer when temperatures are at their hottest.
  2. Annual flowers are the easiest plants to grow. Within 3 months of sowing, an annual will be in full bloom. Once they have flowered, dead-head them regularly which will spur the plant on to produce more flowers in a attempt to produce more seed.
  3. Used coffee grounds, or egg shells are a great way to stop slugs and snails eating your seedlings. Make sure replenish them when it rains!
  4. If you’re using a terracotta pot, it’s a smart idea to line it with plastic or an empty compost bag with holes punched in the bottom before planting as these types of pots absorb water.
  5. Attracting birds to your garden will help to keep insect pests down. During summer many people forget the birds because they think there’s enough food around for them. If the ground hardens due to prolonged hot weather then birds will actually find it difficult to find food so if you supply some bird feed it will help them.
